Quote from S14 DRIFT :FWIW, AFAIK the 2.2L and the 2.0 Produce near enough the same BHP, I may even remember the 2.2 had less BHP but more torque, and revved lower, to 8200 or something. BOO!

Yes, but in reality (having driven both of them a bunch...) the 2.2 is more usable on the street, and at autox too. You can always tell a 2.0 at autocross for two reasons... first of all the drivers feel the need to shift down to first gear for hairpins because they have no torque, and second of all, when they are coming out of a turn and they hit vtec the less able drivers spin out The 2.2s have more low end and less of a hit when vtec comes on, which unless you're a teenager who loves saying "ooooh vtec!", is actually a good thing.

Quote from ajp71 :The 2 litre revs to 9000rpm...

I know :P I've driven 2 and 2.2 litre versions on the street and autocross. As well as a 2 litre supercharged car with over 300 to the rear wheels Unfortunately all this particular supercharger did was add power right up top, rather than add low down grunt. So it was a little bit faster than a regular s2000 down low, but then suddenly when vtec and the SC hit at the same time it would wheelspin in 1st 2nd and sometimes 3rd! Not the most useable powerband.

Can you find some UK RC car forums with 'for sale' sections and see what they're going for on there?

One thing I forgot to mention... if you're looking at s2000s, find out whether they're the 2 litre or 2.2... the 2 litres are a little weaker in the low end with a bigger kick when vtec comes in. The 2.2 have a little more low end and vtec comes in a little earlier and smoother too.

Yeah, I'd say definitely drive an S2000 if you can. In my experience (from driving them on the street and at autocross) they feel a bit more special than a Miata, the gearchange is even nicer on the S2000 than a Miata, but you can feel the extra weight on the S2000. They grip well but are not as nimble or playful as Miatas. Personally I'd never take an S2000 over a Miata for autocross, but I'd definitely consider an S2000 over a Miata for the street.

Quote from S14 DRIFT :I for one would rather see a happy, smile and laughter inducing video than this. In todays world there's enough to bring people down without this as well..

Well then why on earth would you watch the video when you see it's called "Possibly the saddest video in the world"???? It's like people watching a video called "guy gets run over by car" and comes back to the forum saying "that was gross, I don't to see a guy get run over by car!". Yet you watched the video anyway... SMRT.

Quote from nisskid :drift and race are different, simple.

Yeah I totally agree. I didn't realize the post I responded to was talking about drifting. I just assumed it was talking about racing. But yeah I can see with drifting that if you're already at your maximum possible slip angle that a bit more will be too much and you're done

Quote from sil3ntwar :Whats the point in 1100HP anyway.

Well for that matter what's the point in 600hp? Or 400? Or 300? Or 200? If we're looking at what's strictly necessary, 100hp is probably sufficient for most passenger cars. So anything above that is just because you can or because it's fun :P

Quote from jibber :Unless you go over the limits (which doesn't have to mean that you crash the car), you won't learn much. Fact.

Agreed! A lot of people think you need to spin out to really have gone past the limits... I've autox'd for three years and got to the stage where I've won a national championship, but I've actually never spun during an autocross. But have I gone past the limits a bunch... hell yes! Just usually enough that you lose your line or hit a cone or get the back out too far and lose some speed. Not actually spinning or crashing...

Quote from Forbin :I'd surmise that a motorcycle racer expends a lot more energy than a car racer.

I'd definitely agree for the most part, but I wonder whether it still holds true comparing motorcycle racers and F1 drivers, just because of the huge g forces involved in something like F1.

Well the Miata is a bit of an unusual example, I admit, because it's based on an engine that in a previous incarnation was turbocharged. So it's already built to take some boost. But, the point I was trying to make is that you can't just use a blanket statement like "you need this and that and the other if you're going to turbo a car".

As for longevity.... the engine already had 150,000 miles on it when it was turbo'd, and it was not in the best shape ever. It's now had the living shit kicked out of it on a daily basis (he doesn't even wait for it to warm up before giving it), for coming up for 3 years and another 30,000 miles, and it's still making 260whp, based on a recent dyno. It's not had a single mechanical issue since putting the turbo. However, it is a DECENT turbo setup from www.flyinmiata.net that has also been properly tuned, not a crappy home built kit built with little consideration and tuned by someone without a clue, so ymmv :P

Quote from tristancliffe :If you do turbocharge it, make sure you buy a new crank, rods, pistons, block, head, cams, fasteners, gaskets, water pumps, oil pumps, radiators (oil and water) and so on to make sure the change is reliable and working properly.

A little over the top don't you think? He didn't say he wanted to run 40psi or anything. You can run a 1.8 Miata with 12psi (260rwhp) on completely stock internals. Yes, he did put a lot of money into the turbo setup, but you don't always needs engine internals.

Quote from Furiously-Fast :+1, but only when we have better engine sounds. When the windows go down in TDU, the engine sound is louder. Wouldn't mind hearing loud engine roar in a cockpit view in LFS.

Try roof up and roof down on the lx cars You can hear the engine and tires and road noise better with roof down.

I know someone near by with an old GSXR1100 with a turbo, he's running 237rwhp and he rides it all year, wet or dry, without any problems. Just have to be smart about how much power you put down coming out of corners!

WOW. I've watched hundreds of videos of guys like this on the street, but there were at least half a dozen things I've never seen before in this video! Just amazing stuff.

Very interesting discussion! I used this a LOT back when I used to play GPL, but mostly when I was losing the back end. In a lot of situations where opposite lock would not have recovered the rear end, I would use induced understeer and bring the back into line again. I didn't ever use as a regular part of my driving technique, just when I was losing control of the back end. I have used it a bit for the same reason in LFS too. Never really considered whether it was a realistic technique to use in real life, but I think I always assumed it was not realistic. Interesting to get some feedback on this though Thinking about it more now (making the slip angle of the front tires greater than the rear tires), it does make sense to me that it could work in real life!

Quote from teedot :ok i am officially jealous LOL

although this is pretty nice

Yeah, that's awesome man And you won't have to be jealous for long because it's my Mum's house and as soon as I've got my business running well enough to pay a mortgage I will be finding my own place, which I'm sure will be small and crappy with no view, based on what I'll be able to afford, haha :P

Quote from STROBE :

I'm moving to Maple Ridge.

Do it! That's why we moved here! Lived in England until I was 16 and then came on holiday here with the family and fell in love. Moved over here as soon as we could and haven't looked back! So many people here ask "you came from England and you moved to Maple Ridge?? Why on earth would you move here of all places?" They just don't realize how good they have it here! Whereas I, coming from flat old Norfolk, can really appreciate the mountains, haha

For 10 years I lived in a village called Rockland St Mary, which is about 5 miles from Norwich. Really liked it there, Norwich was a lovely city, and it was nice to be in such a small quiet village so close to such a big city with everything you need.
